    Automated Discovery of Internet Censorship by Web Crawling

    Censorship of the Internet is widespread around the world. As access to the web becomes increasingly ubiquitous, filtering of this resource becomes more pervasive. Transparency about specific content that citizens are denied access to is atypical. To counter this, numerous techniques for maintaining URL filter lists have been proposed by various individuals and organisations that aim to empirical data on censorship for benefit of the public and wider censorship research community. We present a new approach for discovering filtered domains in different countries. This method is fully automated and requires no human interaction. The system uses web crawling techniques to traverse between filtered sites and implements a robust method for determining if a domain is filtered. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach by running experiments to search for filtered content in four different censorship regimes. Our results show that we perform better than the current state of the art and have built domain filter lists an order of magnitude larger than the most widely available public lists as of Jan 2018. Further, we build a dataset mapping the interlinking nature of blocked content between domains and exhibit the tightly networked nature of censored web resources

    Monitoring Internet censorship: the case of UBICA

    As a consequence of the recent debate about restrictions in the access to content on the Internet, a strong motivation has arisen for censorship monitoring: an independent, publicly available and global watch on Internet censorship activities is a necessary goal to be pursued in order to guard citizens' right of access to information. Several techniques to enforce censorship on the Internet are known in literature, differing in terms of transparency towards the user, selectivity in blocking specific resources or whole groups of services, collateral effects outside the administrative borders of their intended application. Monitoring censorship is also complicated by the dynamic nature of multiple aspects of this phenomenon, the number and diversity of resources targeted by censorship and its global scale. In the present Thesis an analysis of literature on internet censorship and available solutions for censorship detection has been performed, characterizing censorship enforcement techniques and censorship detection techniques and tools. The available platforms and tools for censorship detection have been found falling short of providing a comprehensive monitoring platform able to manage a diverse set of measurement vantage points and a reporting interface continuously updated with the results of automated censorship analysis. The candidate proposes a design of such a platform, UBICA, along with a prototypical implementation whose effectiveness has been experimentally validated in global monitoring campaigns. The results of the validation are discussed, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed design and suggesting future enhancements and research

    Nonstructural elements and contents often constitute a large fraction of the economic investment in ordinary buildings. In case of seismic events, damage to nonstructural elements not only contributes to the overall direct material costs but can also significantly impact the indirect costs. The latter are especially affected by earthquake-induced damage if production and business flows depend on proper functioning of such nonstructural components, since consequent downtime costs turn out to be very high. Within this framework, server racks' performance under seismic loading is of interest in the present work. The economic relevance of these nonstructural components requires the implementation of proper design solutions so that their performance under earthquakes can fulfill specific requirements. In this perspective, including isolation devices between server racks and building floors is deemed effective for enhancing the stability of the protected equipment, preserving the computer components' integrity and, minimizing downtime losses. Hence, the present work is meant to optimize a hybrid isolation system for server racks. Specifically, the hybrid isolation device designed for such application combines at least two elastomeric isolators and three sliders, and it is intended for the seismic protection of server racks characterized by different configurations.     How India Censors the Web

    One of the primary ways in which India engages in online censorship is by ordering Internet Service Providers (ISPs) operating in its jurisdiction to block access to certain websites for its users. This paper reports the different techniques Indian ISPs are using to censor websites, and investigates whether website blocklists are consistent across ISPs. We propose a suite of tests that prove more robust than previous work in detecting DNS and HTTP based censorship. Our tests also discern the use of SNI inspection for blocking websites, which is previously undocumented in the Indian context. Using information from court orders, user reports, and public and leaked government orders, we compile the largest known list of potentially blocked websites in India. We pass this list to our tests and run them from connections of six different ISPs, which together serve more than 98% of Internet users in India. Our findings not only confirm that ISPs are using different techniques to block websites, but also demonstrate that different ISPs are not blocking the same websites

    Intracellular accumulation of tau oligomers in astrocytes and their synaptotoxic action rely on Amyloid Precursor Protein Intracellular Domain-dependent expression of Glypican-4

    : Several studies including ours reported the detrimental effects of extracellular tau oligomers (ex-oTau) on glutamatergic synaptic transmission and plasticity. Astrocytes greatly internalize ex-oTau whose intracellular accumulation alters neuro/gliotransmitter handling thereby negatively affecting synaptic function. Both amyloid precursor protein (APP) and heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) are required for oTau internalization in astrocytes but the molecular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon have not been clearly identified yet. Here we found that a specific antibody anti-glypican 4 (GPC4), a receptor belonging to the HSPG family, significantly reduced oTau uploading from astrocytes and prevented oTau-induced alterations of Ca2+-dependent gliotransmitter release. As such, anti-GPC4 spared neurons co-cultured with astrocytes from the astrocyte-mediated synaptotoxic action of ex-oTau, thus preserving synaptic vesicular release, synaptic protein expression and hippocampal LTP at CA3-CA1 synapses. Of note, the expression of GPC4 depended on APP and, in particular, on its C-terminal domain, AICD, that we found to bind Gpc4 promoter. Accordingly, GPC4 expression was significantly reduced in mice in which either APP was knocked-out or it contained the non-phosphorylatable amino acid alanine replacing threonine 688, thus becoming unable to produce AICD. Collectively, our data indicate that GPC4 expression is APP/AICD-dependent, it mediates oTau accumulation in astrocytes and the resulting synaptotoxic effects

    Effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blocker initiation on organ support-free days in patients hospitalized with COVID-19

    IMPORTANCE Overactivation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) may contribute to poor clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19. Objective To determine whether angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) initiation improves outcomes in patients hospitalized for COVID-19. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS In an ongoing, adaptive platform randomized clinical trial, 721 critically ill and 58 non–critically ill hospitalized adults were randomized to receive an RAS inhibitor or control between March 16, 2021, and February 25, 2022, at 69 sites in 7 countries (final follow-up on June 1, 2022). INTERVENTIONS Patients were randomized to receive open-label initiation of an ACE inhibitor (n = 257), ARB (n = 248), ARB in combination with DMX-200 (a chemokine receptor-2 inhibitor; n = 10), or no RAS inhibitor (control; n = 264) for up to 10 days. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome was organ support–free days, a composite of hospital survival and days alive without cardiovascular or respiratory organ support through 21 days. The primary analysis was a bayesian cumulative logistic model. Odds ratios (ORs) greater than 1 represent improved outcomes. RESULTS On February 25, 2022, enrollment was discontinued due to safety concerns. Among 679 critically ill patients with available primary outcome data, the median age was 56 years and 239 participants (35.2%) were women. Median (IQR) organ support–free days among critically ill patients was 10 (–1 to 16) in the ACE inhibitor group (n = 231), 8 (–1 to 17) in the ARB group (n = 217), and 12 (0 to 17) in the control group (n = 231) (median adjusted odds ratios of 0.77 [95% bayesian credible interval, 0.58-1.06] for improvement for ACE inhibitor and 0.76 [95% credible interval, 0.56-1.05] for ARB compared with control). The posterior probabilities that ACE inhibitors and ARBs worsened organ support–free days compared with control were 94.9% and 95.4%, respectively. Hospital survival occurred in 166 of 231 critically ill participants (71.9%) in the ACE inhibitor group, 152 of 217 (70.0%) in the ARB group, and 182 of 231 (78.8%) in the control group (posterior probabilities that ACE inhibitor and ARB worsened hospital survival compared with control were 95.3% and 98.1%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this trial, among critically ill adults with COVID-19, initiation of an ACE inhibitor or ARB did not improve, and likely worsened, clinical outcomes.
